How We Protect you

RTH Signature VPN Solution

The RTH Signature VPN solution utilizes two inexpensive but powerful routers running the proven OpenWRT platform to provide you the flexibility to connect through your home ISP from anywhere in the world.  With an RTH configured handheld-sized travel router you can easily connect to the wireless or wired internet at a hotel, airbnb, second home, coffee shop or even over cellular data using a tethered phone.

Once connected, the RTH travel router will automatically create a private network with a secured VPN tunnel to the second RTH router at your home (your personal VPN “server”).  You can then connect any wired or wireless device to the travel router’s private network and have all your data tunneled through your home IP address.  To the outside world your connections look the same as if you were sitting in your living room!

This RTH solution can also enable you to connect to other devices on your home network just like you would at your place so you can avoid the security risks of exposing your home security cameras, Alexa, Google Home, printer or other devices to the public internet.

Don’t have a permanent “home” location to use a server?  Don’t worry – RTH can build you a private cloud-based VPN server that provides many of the same benefits.  Check out our Signature VPN + Cloud Server Package for details.

The RTH solutions utilize cutting edge opensource technologies such as WireGuard, ZeroTier, OpenWRT & Tailscale to provide the flexibility for any situation.

NOT YOUR TYPICAL VPN

Corporate VPN Compatible

The RTH Signature VPN solution was first designed with the remote/work-from-home professional in mind.  Most companies require you to connect to the company network using VPN software installed on your work device; and if you want to travel without raising questions that might make your co-worker jealous, you probably do not want your laptop’s IP address to show you connecting from Cancun.

You may have considered using a commercial VPN provider as a solution, but quickly ran into these roadblocks:

A commercial VPN provider typically uses a VPN client on your device to connect you to their service.  Unfortunately you cannot connect 2 software VPN clients “through” each other on the same device.  If you’re running the commercial VPN client then you can’t also use your company’s VPN client.

Most companies have restrictions or policies against installing non-approved software like a commercial VPN client on your work device.  Some may also lock down the ability to install any external software on your work devices.

Many companies subscribe to IT security services that maintain comprehensive blacklists of commercial VPN provider IP ranges and can either block or raise an alert to connection attempts from these VPNs to their network (sometime used for hacking attempts).

Even without these subscriptions, it’s trivially easy for an IT employee to see if it’s a commercial VPN using a reverse IP lookup.

These challenges normally leave you stuck connecting directly from your travel location’s internet to your company’s VPN server, revealing your IP address and geo-location.  So even if your company doesn’t block international connections, your traveling IP address is still going to be logged by your company’s VPN server and often also stored in your MS Teams or Active Directory employee login records.

The RTH Signature VPN solution solves all these challenges for you.

The RTH Signature VPN solution allows for easy configuration changes so you can benefit from your investment both while traveling and at home.

When You Need Quality You Can Trust

The SIGNATURE VPN Difference

RTH SIGNATURE VPN vs. DO IT YOURSELF (DIY) VPN

We at RTH are huge supporters for technology learning and encourage those who feel comfortable in setting up their own self-hosted VPNs. That said, there are benefits to our experience having setup and supported hundreds of customers across the globe in many difference environments and unique circumstances.

In our experience, GL.iNet products are by far the best devices for self-hosted dual-router setups and are amazingly flexible devices for many different situations. Unfortunately, all this flexibility and options comes with the tradeoff of the devices not be optimized for a specific purpose by default. At RTH, we use both our first-hand and customer experiences, combined with our deep product knowledge as an official GL.iNet Business Partner to customize and optimize each device specifically for it’s purpose as a client, or as a server.

RTH Technical AdvantageS

Increased Security

UNIQUE Travel Router Design

While we customize both your server and travel routers, we pay extra attention to your travel router(s), as this is the most critical component to keeping your location safe.  For this router, we start by segmenting the router into two fully separated networks:

Convenience Network (Personal)

This network uses the local (e.g. hotel, ABnb) network IP address for connecting all your travel devices that do not need to be slowed down by going through the VPN. This allows you to use your personal devices at a new location without the hassle of connecting them each to a new host Wi-Fi network every time you change location.  Just connect your travel router to the new location once and everything else comes online!

This has the additional benefit of protecting your personal devices from being exposed to other devices on the host’s network (hacking or malware from other guests or devices you don’t own).

WireGuard icon

VPN Network (Work)

This network is dedicated exclusively to the VPN tunnel and secured so that the only interface the network can communicate with is your VPN tunnel. Traffic on this LAN cannot connect to other devices using the router or even the router’s WAN port (internet) unless going through the VPN.  This network cannot even reach the router’s web panel.  This ensures there is no possibility of IP or DNS leaks on any protocol at any time. No more worries about leaks at router reboots, during network changes or even when connecting the router to “captive portal” logins!  We also remove any internal signs of the router’s brand, so corporate software on your work device cannot tell you’re using a GL.iNet brand router.

Additionally we will configure your device’s LAN ports to your preference.  Typically if you have a single LAN port (like the Beryl AX), we will embed it with the VPN network, but if you have multiple (like the Slate AX) we can assign one port to each network, or both ports to either one.

Note: If you ever want to use your router for another purpose or re-sell it later, you can clear all these customization with a simple device reset.

Client & Server Tech Benefits

Custom VPN Client Kill Switch Design

A kill switch prevents your VPN from leaking your travel IP if your VPN tunnel was to be somehow disrupted (like a server ISP outage) by locking down the traffic.  While the stock feature is good, it has shown to have bugs in multiple firmware versions causing leaks with certain configuration conflicts, during reboots or when connecting to new networks. This is a trade-off reality of the stock firmware’s flexible design.

Our approach protects against these potential issues by securing at a deeper level and fully isolating your local VPN network from all communication except the VPN interface.  The VPN network with your work devices is completely cut off unless the VPN tunnel is active and secure, no matter what other changes you are making to the router at the time.

Improved home IP change correction

Most residential ISP connections provide you a public IP address, but it is not a static IP address – meaning your home IP address will change randomly.  We’ve seen some ISPs only do this rarely, some weekly or monthly, and others that do it daily. With the stock configuration there can be a lag of 10 minutes or more before your server detects the IP change and updates the DDNS server, meaning that when traveling your VPN tunnel will stop working and you’ll manually have to restart the tunnel.  This could leave you having to wait 10+ minutes before being able to successfully reconnect.

At RTH, we customize your VPN server router’s firmware to minimize this, and in some cases also have methods to help control the timing of your home ISP IP rotations until off-work hours.

Proven Network Setup & DNS optimization

A proper VPN setup needs to ensure every LAN/WAN network on the home and client sides is setup properly or you can end up with IP and routing conflicts. Similarly, it’s easy to make mistakes with DNS that can end up leaking location data or with connection errors. With RTH, we have proven configurations that minimize the chance of these errors, no matter where you travel globally; and if you do run into an issue at a new location, you have experienced support on tap to help adjust.

VPN Speed optimization

RTH has setup VPN networks across dozens of global ISPs and are familiar with which ones implement things like network throttling and selective port blocking. We’ve had a chance to thoroughly test workarounds and which ports can be used to minimize the chance of your VPN connection getting throttled; as well as proper MTU tuning to optimize both speed and compatibility with different network types.
Tailscale
ZeroTier

Multiple VPN Connection Options

Custom configurations for Wireguard, OpenVPN, Tailscale, ZeroTier & Shadowsocks.  Sometime our customers are stuck with a restrictive ISP that does not provide public IPs or port forwarding, in which case you cannot use your home IP with the traditional Wireguard or OpenVPN VPN configurations.  In these situations RTH has extensive experience using alternate technologies such as ZeroTier or Tailscale to achieve your same goals.  This includes also includes custom “kill switch” methods for each scenario to keep your IP location safe.  We also have proven GL.iNet configurations for bypassing some country-level firewalls that do no allow tradition VPN traffic across borders.

Connect from anywhere with 3 VPN protocols - including ZeroTier!

ZeroTier

Worried about not being able to connect?  In addition to the Wireguard & OpenVPN protocols, Signature VPN customers now get an additional backup VPN option using ZeroTier as part of our standard setup!  ZeroTier runs on an entirely different technology than Wiregurard or OpenVPN protocols, so if you find yourself in a situation where your primary VPN cannot connect due to blocking by the country/network you are connecting from, then you will already have a built-in backup option to easily fallback to and continue to work securely.  Given that ZeroTier uses a different protocol than normal VPNs, it can usually connect even from restrictive networks and countries.  Not only will you have a backup VPN option for emergencies, you’ll also have a backup method to reach your home server’s Admin Panel from anywhere, even if your primary VPN is restricted.  (China or North Korea travel is excluded as they require more advanced technologies to connect from.)

RTH Service AdvantageS

Benefits of Personalized Service

Many of our customers don’t want to spend hours learning and experimenting a new technology area and then *hoping* it’s set up right – especially when doing it wrong could put your income at risk.  This is what RTH was built on – we have customers across many segments from engineers, finance/fintech, automotive, insurance, health education and even quite a few tech and software professionals that simply do not want to spend time learning a new area of networking.  RTH’s approach only requires your guided hands-on setup for a few simple steps, and then we do all the setup & testing remotely.  You don’t need to be “technical” beyond basic computer use and plugging things in.

With RTH you have a partner in ensuring your success to travel safely!

"No stress" fully guided process

We remotely setup and test your devices end-to-end to ensure functionality, and then provide you with both a customized User Guide and thorough online personal training session to walk through using the devices step-by-step via screenshare.

User Testing Support:

We encourage every customer to test using their devices locally (e.g. from a coffee shop) prior to doing any real travel. Through this process we are available to help if you have questions or get stuck – including thorough instruction on how to connect your client router to networks that have captive portal authentication (e.g. corporate chain coffee shops, airports and many hotels).

Travel and follow-up support

We like to take the stress out of travel. When you do travel remote for the first time, just let your consultant know and we can arrange to be “on call” to ensure you get connected for the first time at your new destination. Most customers quickly get comfortable using their setup after the first time (especially with our step-by-step guides), but you get to travel with the assurance that you have support at your back.

Work device training

As part of our normal training we cover how to secure your work and 2FA devices to prevent leaks from things like Wi-Fi positioning, bluetooth discovery, etc. We also can help guide in accessories you can by that help you use a more secure wired connection even without a LAN port, as well as many essential travel convenience accessories from our personal experience as digital nomads.

Personalized Partnership

Our goal is to make working remotely safe, easy and low-stress for our Signature VPN customers. Our personalized end-to-end approach means you have a known consultant to guide you in the process and for follow up, not a random call center.

Basic Requirements Checklist

Review the areas below to ensure you’re ready.

We also strongly encourage a review of our FAQs to ensure you’re aware of a VPN’s capabilities and limits to meet your needs.

  • You’ll need a place to plug in your RTH home router with an AC outlet.  Ideally this should be close to your home ISP modem so it can be connected via an ethernet cable; although it can be connected wirelessly if you’re using the RTH Recommended hardware.
  • Please note that “home” could be yours or a friend or family member’s place that is willing to host your router and share their internet connection.
  • Given the RTH Recommended hardware supports up to 120 devices with blazing fast features such as Wi-Fi 6 or 7, and MU-MIMO, RTH can additionally help you setup the home router as your primary router to upgrade your entire home wifi network.
  • ISP Speed: Ideally we recommend you have at least a 50 Mbps rated download home internet package.
    • Most ISP services provide asymmetrical service (the download speed is much faster than the upload)
    • Upload speed will be key to how fast your VPN tunnel will be when traveling.  We would like to see at least 25 Mbps VPN tunnel speed for remote work that includes 2-way video conferencing (Webex / Zoom / MS Teams) and the associated overhead of the RTH and corporate VPN tunnel encryption. This means you’ll want a minimum of 30 Mbps real-life upload speed at the home location.
    • Other types of typical work (e.g. email, browsing, web applications and watching video) rely mostly on download and are less sensitive to uploads speeds.
    • If your ISP service is symmetrical (equal down/up speed), then total ISP speeds as low as 30 Mbps can work.
    • You can easily test your current home connection speeds by ensuring you have are in close wifi range of your current network and using web tools such as Speedtest.net.
  • Modem Access: Access to your ISP modem for basic administration and port forwarding.  This login is usually provided to you by your ISP or often printed on a sticker on the modem itself.  This allows for the most straightforward RTH VPN solution, but if such access is not possible, then RTH has alternative configurations that can work around this limitation (such as ZeroTier & Tailscale) which are still included in the Signature VPN package.
  • ISP VPN blocking:  RTH will help check if your home service blocks or throttles typical VPN traffic (not typical).  In this case we still have workaround options.
  • You do NOT need a fixed or static home IP for the RTH solution.  Most home ISP services will change your home IP address randomly and RTH is ready for this with our dynamic configuration.
  • You will want to ensure your travel destination provides reliable internet service.  This could be your Airbnb, hotel, guest/2nd home, dormatory, a coffee shop or co-working space.  Anywhere you can get your work done.  We recommend at least 30 Mbps service if using 2-way video conferencing, but have had success down with less than 20 Mpbs with only minor loss of video resolution.
  • Your RTH travel router can connect to any of these networks via wireless or an ethernet cable so your work devices are all protected and connected home and protected by the RTH VPN.
  • Your RTH travel router also has the ability to tether with a mobile phone so, if you’ll have decent 4/5G cellular data service at your destination and a compatible phone, this can provide a handy backup solution to still remain online and RTH VPN secured in case of wifi outages.

2

Recommended Hardware

The only unique hardware you will need for RTH to be ready to set you up are 2 devices.  One to function as your VPN “server” at home, and the second as your VPN “client” travel companion router.  As a consulting service, RTH does not sell hardware directly but strongly recommends specific models of GL.iNet routers for our solution as powerful and reliable devices at affordable pricing.  These routers combine cutting edge features with the premier OpenWRT router operating system, providing the proven security and flexibility for RTH’s unique VPN solution; which is why RTH has become an official GL.iNet Service Partner.

We can support devices such as Raspberry Pi as your “home” router, and may be able to support you with other router brands running a modern version of the OpenWRT or DD-WRT operating system (Asus, TP-Link, etc), but cannot guarantee the same secure functionality on untested devices.  Please contact us if you’d like to discuss additional hardware options for a Signature VPN package.

We recommend these devices based on years of “hands on” reliability across hundreds of RTH customers and the amazing flexibility for wired, wireless and cellular-tethered connection situations when traveling.  For self-hosted VPN setups you will need at least 1 home (VPN server) router and 1 travel (VPN client) router.

For most customers, a Brume 3 (when available) or Beryl AX server and Slate AX travel router is the best mix of price & performance if you do not intend to replace your home ISP router.

For many customers, your home (VPN server) ISP upload speed will be the limiting VPN speed factor, not the hardware.  A typical work laptop is not regularly using more than 15-20 Mbps for general office work (video/audio calls, email, messaging, etc), so a 300 Mpbs hardware speed limit is much more than sufficient for an individual VPN setup.

Server Routers recommendations (the devices that stays at home): Listed in ascending price & features.

  • Brume 2 (GL-MT2500A) VPN Security Gateway: [~89 USD] – Most affordable option.  Very compact device with no WiFi for minimal footprint and power consumption (also great for a minimalist backup server at friend’s or family’s house).  Wireguard VPN server speeds up to 355 Mbps.
  • Beryl AX (GL-MT3000) Pocket-sized Wi-Fi 6 Travel Router: [~98 USD] – Affordable option that is also compact.  Includes 1 LAN port, wifi and the versatility to be used as a server or travel router.  Wireguard VPN server speeds up to 300 Mbps.
  • 🆕 Brume 3 (GL-MT5000) High-Speed VPN Security Gateway: [~119 USD] – Newest high-speed version of the compact dedicated VPN appliance line.  No WiFi for minimal footprint and power consumption (also great for a minimalist backup server at friend’s or family’s house).  Wireguard VPN server speeds up to 1100 Mbps and new OpenVPN-DCO support up to 1000 Mbps.
  • Flint 2 (GL-MT6000) Wi-Fi 6 High-Performance Home Router: [~159 USD] – Full sized router that can serve a full home router and VPN server.  Recommended if you’d like to replace your current ISP router (assuming they allow it) with more powerful home wifi coverage and a feature-rich device; or if you plan to have multiple people connecting to your home VPN server concurrently.  Includes dual-WAN (dual ISP) support and has 6 wired ports that can be configured as 2 WAN + 4 LAN, or 1 WAN + 5 LAN.  Wireguard VPN server speeds up to 900 Mbps and powerful enough for multiple VPN users.

Travel Router recommendations (the device you travel with): Listed in ascending price & features.

  • Beryl AX (GL-MT3000) Pocket-sized Wi-Fi 6 Travel Router: [~98 USD] – The most affordable of the high-performance GL wifi travel routers.  Provides 1 LAN port for a hardwired PC/laptop and Wireguard VPN client speeds up to 300 Mbps in a compact form factor.
  • Slate AX (GL-AXT1800) Wi-Fi 6 Travel Router: [~117 USD] –  Slightly larger and more powerful wifi travel router featuring 2 LAN ports and top Wireguard VPN client speeds up to 550 Mbps.  Also more easily compatible with connecting to EAP wifi networks (e.g. corporate-type wifi networks like corporate offices and WeWork setups).
  • 🆕 Beryl 7 (GL-MT3600BE) Portable Travel Router: [~118 USD] – The newest version of the compact Beryl wifi travel router lineup with WiFi7 and drastically increased VPN speeds.  Provides 1 LAN port for a hardwired PC/laptop, Wireguard VPN client speeds up to 1100 Mbps and new OpenVPN-DCO support for up to 1000 Mbps.
  • Slate 7 (GL-BE3600) Wi-Fi 7 Travel Router : [~169 USD] – The newest version of the Slate models that includes 1 LAN port, a digital display, EAP compatibility and the latest WiFi 7 protocol.  Top Wireguard client speeds up to 540Mbps.

Highly recommended travel add-on:

  • GL.iNet Travel Organizer: [~16 USD] – As a convenience case and protection for your Slate or Beryl travel router.
  • See our “Recommended Extras” section below for accessories such as battery backup, cables, etc.

We understand that being offline during work hours is not an option.  These are additional items to consider that we have found from personal experience to be useful in being prepared for anything in your travels:

Travel Extras:

  • GL.iNet Travel Organizer – As a convenience case and protection for your Slate or Beryl series travel router
  • USB-C or USB-A to ethernet adapter if your work laptop does not have a built-in Ethernet (LAN) port.
  • USB-C powered 5 Port LAN Switch if you need extra LAN ports for connecting multiple computers to your travel router.
  • AC extension cord with multiple outlets for powering your travel router and work devices when working from coffee shops, cafes, etc, without having to be limited in your seating choice.
  • 3-prong to 2-prong plug adapters.  It is not uncommon to have only 2-prong wall outlets available in some countries (e.g. Latin America). This ensures your work/travel devices can still plug-in, even in older locations.
  • 10 ft. ethernet CAT6 cable for flexibility in positioning your travel router near windows or hallways to get the best signal to the host wifi network.
  • Pocket portable power supply (or smaller) that can power a Beryl or Slate travel router for 7+ hours via direct USB connection.  Please note that not all power banks are equal.  The Slate AX requires at least 20W and the Beryl AX at least 15W of direct USB power to work properly.
  • Laptop portable power supply for power outages or powering your travel router, laptop and phone while on the move (coffee shop, beach, etc).

Home Extras:

  • Home-based battery backup and surge protector – On your home (server) side, you may want to consider a battery backup solution to keep your VPN connected during power outages.  Most ISPs have their own backup power for the lines to your home, so as long as you can keep both your primary ISP modem/router and your GL.iNet VPN router (server) on backup power, they’ll remain available for you to use your VPN (and the home will still have wifi).  We’ve had good experience with the model above, although you can certainly scale up for additional battery life.
  • Remote Controlled Smart Plugs for remote rebooting of your home ISP modem/router or GL Server Router in case of a device lockup or failed power up.
  • SMS Remote Controlled Smart Plug for remote rebooting of your home ISP modem/router even if the main router is locked up (so the internet is down).

Alternative Solution

Signature VPN + Cloud Server

When you need an alternative to a physical location for your “home” VPN server, the Cloud Server option is the next best choice.  In this case, instead of using a router as your home-country server, RTH will guide you through setting up a personal account with a cloud hosting provider, and build you a Virtual Private Server (VPS) that your travel router can connect to from anywhere.  While using a data center IP is a bit less “stealthy” than using a residential IP address, it still retains the key value that your IP will not be from a known VPN provider, so it will not be obvious you are using a VPN service, and not be included in automated VPN blacklists.

Note: This is a much larger time investment for RTH, as we are building you an entire Private Could VPN Server that you will own!

Step 1

Personal VPN FIT Assessment (FREE!)

This is how we can determine if a personal VPN can meet your specific needs.  In our initial call we’ll evaluate how to create a solution tailored to your situation.  We will discuss:

1. Your VPN requirements / purpose:  Are you: a) Working remotely for an employer and will also have a corporate VPN client for your work device?  b) An investor/trader that will need access to geo-restricted brokerage/crypto portals and two-factor authentication devices?   c) An online gamer?  d) A leisure traveler that wants to maintain access to home-country streaming content and websites?  (Or some combination of these?)

2. Your intended travel devices:  Do you have an employer provided laptop?  Employer provided mobile phone or hardware two-factor authentication (2FA) devices?  Do you use a personal laptop and/or phone for work with company software installed, or an employer provided mobile SIM card?

3. Your current Internet Service Provider (ISP) setup:  What internet speed does your home ISP connection support and are there are any restrictions or unique technical challenges?  This could include port-forwarding restrictions, carrier grade NAT (CGNAT) or bandwidth caps / speed restrictions.

4. Your intended travel locations:  While our solutions are designed to work mostly worldwide in multiple settings (hotels, apartments, Airbnbs, etc), there are some destinations that present unique challenges. With years of global expat experience ourselves, we’ve likely encountered it before and are very familiar with the “little” details that can make all the difference in keeping you critically connected.

Gathering this information will enable us to determine the optimal type of configuration for your needs.  By using flexible and leading-edge opensource secure technologies such as WireGuard, ZeroTier & Tailscale, combined with our deep router expertise as an official GL.iNet Value Added Service Partner, we have yet to find a personal VPN challenge we could not work through using these devices.

During this conversation we will also be able to recommend the right hardware investment, saving you time and money by purchasing the right devices for your needs the first time.

Stop guessing.. Get your answers.

We look forward to talking with our customers and provide our 15 minute Personal VPN Fit Assessment at no cost!  You can submit a question or book a call using the Contact Us button below.

We believe our customers should own their end-to-end solution.  The RTH VPN process provides you a final solution that you fully own, without any subscriptions or dependence on paid third parties. This means you will have only 2 one-time investments: 1) Your hardware devices, and; 2) The one-time RTH service setup and support package.

1. Your VPN hardware devices:  A typical Signature VPN solution relies on two highly configurable (OpenWRT linux based) routers.  One that will remain fixed in your home country (the VPN server) and one that you travel with (the VPN client).  You have total freedom of where you want to purchase the devices and you will retain total control of the devices following the RTH setup.  We can work with customers on a variety of devices you may already own (e.g. as Raspberry Pi, linux mini-pc, linux NAS, etc), but if starting with a clean slate, we know our Standard or Budget hardware recommendations are nearly guaranteed to work for you – and most of all – proven to be secure.

2. The RTH Support service:  The service package is for the full end-to-end setup and testing of the entire VPN solution, plus our personal user training, our custom RTH user guide and personal follow-up support as you travel.  RTH is primarily a convenience and “peace of mind” service.  We do have some “secret sauce” in that we use our in-depth device expertise as a GL.iNet official partner to secure your devices beyond what’s available in the standard device settings, but this is us being “extra” about your data security and adding some additional capabilities.  We are experienced expats ourselves and know how critical it is to “do it right”.  Our primary value proposition is that you don’t need to worry about becoming an expert in technical details to be safe.  We work directly with you to configure your home modem/network (if needed) and get your devices initially online.  From that point we login remotely to the devices and do all the customization and testing without taking up your time.  When setup & testing is complete, we will notify you and setup a time to go through personal testing and training on how to confidently use the devices as you travel.

Heard enough? Get started now.

Already know this is the solution for you?  Don’t have time to wait?  You can purchase your hardware and our Signature VPN Support package immediately to ensure we can schedule your setup as fast as possible – no need to schedule a Fit Assessment first.  The RTH portion of this is risk-free as we will refund 100% of the RTH service package purchase price if we find we cannot make the VPN solution work for you.  This is the fastest way to engage with RTH as we are normally booked at least a week out.  (We can try for 48 hour turn-around in critical situations if you already have your hardware ready – just let us know in the order checkout notes.)

Step 3

Device Setup, Training & Support

RTH will be ready to get you enabled fast once your hardware arrives.  From this point we go to work for you.  The remainder is simple:

1. Customer device enablement call:  RTH will schedule a time with your (typically ~45 minutes) in which we will guide you through plugging your new devices in, connecting cables and getting them online.  In this call we will also guide you step-by-step through any configuration that needs done on your home ISP modem to enable port-forwarding or other settings (via Google Meet screen sharing).  This does not require any “technical” expertise on your part.

2. RTH custom device configuration:  Once the devices are online and accessible to RTH, we do all the device setup and customization remotely while you go about your day.  We will configure both devices specific to your situation, secure them and test them.  We will be able to verify your VPN is securely accessible externally and test the speeds you can expect from outside the country.  We will then notify you once the devices are ready (typically within a couple hours following the call).  During this call we will also work with you to schedule a follow-up training call (~30-45 minutes).

3. User Training & Support:  Immediately following device configuration we will send you our custom RTH User Guide that is tailored specifically to your devices and contains all the links and passwords (wifi, admin, etc) for your devices.  You own them and you can control them.  On our subsequent training call we will walk you through accessing the devices and how to use your travel router when travelling.  This call will also include:

  • How to securely use your work devices and 2FA device with the travel router when abroad to prevent data leaks (e.g. use of cables vs wifi, disabling bluetooth, etc);
  • How to install additional admin apps on your personal phone & laptop for easy management of the devices and connecting any additional desired VPN clients to your new home server (e.g. your personal phone, laptop, etc);
  • How to test your new VPN setup locally before you travel (at a friend or family’s house, a coffee shop, etc) to ensure you’re comfortable with using it and verify it’s compatible with any other critical software or services (e.g. your company VPN client, 2FA, specific websites, video conferencing, etc).
  • Provide recommendations on any travel accessories that you may want to consider for your situation.  As experienced travelers ourselves, we are familiar with the little travel “surprises” and can help you plan ahead.

4. Real-time User Travel Support and Follow-up:  If you desire, RTH will schedule with you a time to ensure we can be available on the day you arrive at your first travel location and ensure you are able to get connected.  We want you to be able to focus on settling into your new destination and not stressed about getting connected.  We have experience getting your travel router online from apartments, hotels, airbnbs, resorts, etc – wired, wireless, or even over mobile data if necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

RemoteToHome.io is an IT consulting company focused on providing specialized and affordable support to individuals and business in the areas of private VPNs, networking and remote access.

As a consulting company, our focus is purely on providing quality specialized consulting and support services to our customers instead of hardware logistics.  We want to “stay in our lane” and let our vendor partners do what they do best.  This provides the additional benefit that any hardware service or warranty issues can be handled directly with the manufacture instead of a middleman.

Also, while we strongly recommend GL.iNet hardware based on our positive experiences with their devices, we can support our solutions on several varieties of hardware and vendor platforms.

No.  Our Signature VPN solution can work with a variety of hardware, including many routers that run OpenWRT or DD-WRT software, a Raspberry Pi or even a linux-based PC (for the “home” server).

We provide our hardware recommendations based on our experience with devices that are proven to supply the power, flexibility and reliability to give you top performance at an affordable price point.  This testing is what enables us to provide our our Service Guarantee when using these recommended devices.

If you have existing devices you would prefer to use for a Signature VPN setup, then we’d recommend selecting our Personal VPN Fit Assessment option so our RTH consultant can explore the device capabilities with you prior to investing in a Signature VPN package.

Upon purchase of an RTH service you will receive an email to schedule a time that your consultant can have an initial call with you.

For our Home or Business Support services this will include a needs analysis and solution sizing estimate.

For a typical Signature VPN setup, the process will involve an initial call to understand your current home network, guide you through physical connection of the routers and work with you to configure your home modem.

Once the devices are accessible, then your consultant can perform the router configuration and initial testing process remotely and notify you once complete (usually a few hours).

Your consultant will then schedule a follow-up call for final tweaks based on your preference and train you on using the devices (very simple).

We will also encourage you to do a “practice run” by connecting your travel router from a nearby remote location with wifi (e.g. coffee shop or a friend’s house), prior to using it on a trip.  Our consultant can schedule a time to be available for this.

We can work with you over a variety of communication channels: phone, video call, WhatsApp, TeamViewer, Google Remote Desktop, etc.  Video or desktop sharing can help make initial setup and modem configuration much easier.

No.  Your RTH consultant will only need access to your devices for the initial setup, configuration and testing.  A final part of our training will be to show you how to remove all RTH access and change passwords.  Once setup, the Signature VPN is a solution that you own and does not rely on any services or infrastructure from RTH to continue operating.

Some of our customers do choose to leave the devices accessible to RTH for a while so we can more easily support them when they initially travel in case of issues or questions, but given the device’s ease-of-use, most are comfortable using them solo after a few times.

RTH is of course always available to support our customers under our Home Support plans for assistance with upgrades or additional configurations; and while we do not operate a 24/7 tech support business, our consultants do leave you with personal contact information and always try to be available to our customers in the case of an emergency that would prevent you from working while on travel.

The RTH Signature VPN is a personal Virtual Private Network solution.  This VPN solution creates an encrypted tunnel between your remote location and your home, allowing all your internet traffic to be transparently routed through your home IP address.

This differs from a typical commercial VPN service where you pay a subscription fee to route all your traffic through the provider’s external VPN servers.  These services provide benefits that solve for different challenges; but they all share the drawback that it is easy for the websites or company network you connect with to detect you are using a VPN service.

The RTH Signature VPN is not a commercial VPN service offering.  We are a consulting service that helps configure both your home network and two unique VPN devices you own to automatically create the secure tunnel and be easily used wherever you travel.  With RTH, we get you setup, and then you own an end-to-end VPN tunnel from your travel location of choice back to your own home.

With a typical commercial VPN service, you usually pay for a subscription and install a software program (VPN client) on your devices to connect them to any of the provider’s VPN servers using an encrypted tunnel.  These VPN services have many benefits:

  • Secures your private information and browsing.  For example, a wifi network you use at a coffee shop can normally see the sites you visit and services you connect to.  Likewise, your home ISP and DNS providers often collect and even sell tracking data.  A VPN limits much of this by placing all your traffic inside the secure tunnel to the VPN provider’s servers.
  • Avoid bandwidth throttling.  Some providers slow or block certain types of traffic such as gaming, streaming or download services.  With a VPN, they cannot determine what type of service is being used or what content you may be accessing / downloading.
  • Access region-blocked services like Netflix, regional sports coverage or even major banking / financial sites.  A VPN service can allow your traffic to appear to originate in any region where they maintain a VPN server.

As answered in the “What is the Signature VPN?”  The RTH Signature VPN is primarily focused on solving for a different challenge.  We provide a solution for your IP address to appear from home when you’re actually elsewhere… but wait, we can do both!

RTH’s solution offers flexibility to solve for many privacy challenges:

  • When you travel and need your devices to appear to be connecting from home for work or otherwise, you can connect to your RTH configured travel router to your RTH configured home VPN server.
  • After-hours, with a few button clicks, you can instead redirect your travel router to commercial VPN service to take advantage of privacy or avoid region blocking for all your personal travel devices.
  • When back at home, you can easily connect your travel router in the same way with a commercial VPN service, providing a second home wifi network that is always VPN routed.

RTH Personal Support consulting service can also help you configure diverse options such as connecting separate homes into a single network.  The power of the RTH solution is we setup the devices you own with maximum functionality, giving you significant flexibility and options.

RTH is committed to customer satisfaction.  This includes empowering you with the knowledge of what your VPN can and cannot provide, so you can make informed decisions on how you responsibly use your tech.

The RTH Signature VPN can transparently encrypt and tunnel (mask) the original location of the internet traffic from any networked devices you own when it comes to connecting over the internet.  This is sufficient for most external services that rely on your IP address for geo-location; but there are some limits that no VPN solution can tackle when it comes to location awareness at a device administrator level:

  • Device GPS tracking: If your devices contain GPS hardware, then your location can be tracked by anyone that has sufficient access to the GPS service or device’s GPS history.  For example, some organizations with higher security concerns (defense, government & contractors, field-work, proprietary tech, etc) may GPS equip their organization’s laptops and even use geo-fencing to provide alerts if a device leaves a specified area.  Some VPN services may claim to be able to spoof GPS locations to external services, but this does *not* work for situations where the organization has admin access to the device.
  • Company-owned cell phones: If your work cell phone is company-owned, then it’s location will very likely be easily accessible to the company, both because of the built-in location services (GPS) and the company’s direct access to the cellular provider’s service plan usage (roaming, cell tower connections, etc).
  • Company-owned cellular plan: While you can tunnel all internet traffic sent by your phone (even over mobile data), this is separate from your phone’s radio antenna connecting to the local cell towers.  If you own your own phone, but it’s still using a direct-company contracted service plan, then they will have access to the plan’s usage data (such as roaming) from the cellular carrier.
  • Company apps on personal phones: Again, you can route all your phone’s IP traffic (both wifi and mobile data IP traffic) over your VPN, including traffic from business apps you may use on your personal device; but you should be aware if any of these applications also have permissions to access your cell phone’s location services (built-in GPS).  You can always simply turn off GPS, and we have tips on small things to look out for with common business apps you may use from the app stores (e.g. Slack, Webex, Zoom, etc), but some companies may require you to install a more invasive “security” or administrator-level app in order to use your personal phone to access company resources.  Some of these apps may require location services (GPS) access and even have the ability to enable it directly.
  • OS location services & background wifi scanning: Most laptops (and nearly all mobile) operating systems (OS) use background scanning to continually look for nearby available wifi networks you can connect to (e.g. the popup list of “available networks” when you turn on wifi).  This scanning includes data like the SSID (wifi network name) and MAC address (unique hardware code) of these available networks.  This data can then be cross-referenced with various online network mapping database to find the scanned wifi network’s physical location.  While in our experience it’s unusual for most organizations to actively monitor this type of data, it is stored for some time and can likely be collected if the device is audited.  All personal or work laptop users should be aware of the location data collection features of their OS and how to opt-out if desired (especially on personal devices) and/or turn off scanning.  More information for major laptop & desktop OS’ can be found here: Windows, Mac, Ubuntu.

While we have customers that continue to successfully work remotely while traveling for years without issue, we strive to provide our customers with full transparency to all technical considerations.

These are some other highlights we feel anyone should be aware of when considering remote travel plans:

  • VPN legality:  While VPNs are legal in most of the world, there are a few countries that ban or restrict VPN technology.
  • Sensitive or Export Controlled data:  If your organization utilizes access to such data there may be legal restrictions to traveling with a device that stores or could have access to that data from outside of your country.  This could even apply to customer or employee personal data that may be stored on your work devices.  Employees working with these types of data are usually trained on it’s proper safeguard and handling; and may have extra requirements prior to travel.
  • Physical device security and support:  Will your device be secured at your travel location and do you have a backup plan to continue working if your device breaks down while abroad?
  • Company policy:  While many organizations are ambivalent about exact location requirements for remote workers, others may have formal policies regarding location.  RTH always recommends you familiarize yourself with your organization’s work and travel policies.  RTH consultants cannot provide you advice related to employment matters or policy.

RTH consultants are not qualified to provide legal advice and will not knowingly support or condone violation or circumvention of any country’s laws.
